Unfineshed Histories Vol. I

Etel Adnan - Night & Angels

Exhibition

29.Sep – 20. Nov 2018

The project »Unfinished Histories« begins with the exhibition »Night & Angels« by the Lebanese-American painter, poet and essayist Etel Adnan, which will be accompanied by a sound installation by the composer and sound artist Ulrike Haage and a spoken text by the actor Angela Winkler, staged in the vestry in the cloister ruins. »Vol. I – Night & Angels« is curated by the Publisher and Translator Klaudia Ruschkowski.

Etel Adnan’s biography is characterised by her multicultural environment. She was born in 1925 in Beirut, when Lebanon was occupied by the French. The daughter of a Christian Greek mother and a Moslem Syrian father later studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and at Harvard and Berkley in the USA. She went on to spend her time living in the San Francisco Bay, Beirut and Paris. Her origins, family and the history of the Near East are above all present in her literary work. She achieved international recognition in the 1970s with her philosophical essays, novels, poetry and journalism, becoming an important voice in Arabic literature.

On the 12th of September 2018, Christopher Weickenmeier visited Etel Adnan in Paris. You can read an excerpt from their conversation in the Kultur Mitte Magazin: www.kultur-mitte.de
